Warren Haynes reveals “Thorazine Shuffle (Live)” from symphonic album
Warren Haynes has released “Thorazine Shuffle (Live),” the latest preview of his upcoming album, Dreams & Songs: A Symphonic Journey, due September 18 via Evil Teen Records in the U.S. and Provogue/Artone Label Group in Europe.
The new version of the Gov’t Mule song, originally released on the band’s 1998 album Dose, features an orchestral arrangement by John Medeski.
“John Medeski did the arrangement for ‘Thorazine Shuffle,’ and his unique take on music in general was what led me to ask him to arrange that particular piece,” shares Haynes. “He was able to strike a balance for ‘Thorazine Shuffle’ that takes it a little further avant-garde than most of the songs but still has that beautiful symphonic quality as far as the arrangement is concerned that really transports it into another place. His counter-melodies and all the different textures that he put in that song elevated it in a way that I wasn’t expecting. It’s probably the most unique arrangement on the record.”
Dreams & Songs: A Symphonic Journey was co-produced by Haynes and Don Was and recorded in 2019 at Thomas Wolfe Auditorium in Haynes’ hometown of Asheville, North Carolina. The performance marked the debut of Haynes’ Dreams & Songs symphonic show and featured the 64-piece Asheville Symphony Orchestra.
Haynes was joined by Oteil Burbridge on bass, John Medeski on organ and keyboards, Jeff Sipe on drums and Greg Osby on saxophone, with Edwin McCain and Jasmine Muhammad providing background vocals.
The 16-track live album was mixed by Bob Clearmountain and features material spanning more than three decades of Haynes’ career. The collection draws from his work with Gov’t Mule, the Allman Brothers Band, The Dead and his solo catalog, with the songs reworked through orchestral arrangements.
The album also includes a performance of the Grateful Dead’s “Shakedown Street” along with Gov’t Mule songs “Banks of the Deep End” and “Raven Black Night.”
Haynes first presented the Dreams & Songs Symphonic Experience in Asheville in 2019. The show has since been staged at Red Rocks Amphitheatre and in cities including New Orleans, Indianapolis, Detroit, Cleveland and Cincinnati.
The Warren Haynes Dreams & Songs Symphonic Experience will return for two performances at Nashville’s Schermerhorn Symphony Center on March 11 and March 12, 2027.
Haynes is currently on the road with Gov’t Mule for the band’s Kicking In Your Stall Tour, which runs through August 23 and includes nine co-headlining shows with Joe Bonamassa.
Gov’t Mule will then join Ziggy Marley for the Dreaming The Same Dream Tour this fall. The 16-date co-headlining run, which also features a guest DJ set from YOLA, begins September 23 at The Rooftop at Pier 17 in New York City and concludes October 17 in Dallas.
