John Mayall dies at 90

John Mayall has died at the age of 90. It was announced in a statement on Mayall’s social media pages.

The statement said, “It is with heavy hearts that we bear the news that John Mayall passed away peacefully in his California home yesterday, July 22, 2024, surrounded by loving family. Health issues that forced John to end his epic touring career have finally led to peace for one of this world’s greatest road warriors. John Mayall gave us ninety years of tireless efforts to educate, inspire and entertain.”

Mayall was recently announced as a 2024 inductee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Mayall is known as the “Godfather of British Blues” and released nearly 70 albums over his career.

In 1963, Mayall formed the legendary group, John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, one of the most influential bands in the history of blues rock. Mayall’s 1966 studio album Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton, also known as “The Beano Album,” is considered by many as one of the greatest albums of all-time.

Mayall’s final studio album came in 2022 with the acclaimed The Sun Is Shining Down. The album earned Mayall his second Grammy nomination.
