Lady Flint: Lady Flint EP Review

“Guitar.  Drums.  No Cheating.”  This is the description French duo Lady Flint offers of themselves, a simple and direct plea to the heart of the modern blues fan.  The drum-and-guitar outfit don’t stray far from their creed, and their debut EP – released in February of this year – shuns any studio “trickery” in favor of showcasing Lady Flint’s tight instrumentation.  The self-titled five-tracker is a smart, concise DIY recording ranging in feeling from aggressive (“Not A Wise Man”) to mournful (“The Last Time I Was Sober”) without losing edge.

Lady Flint is mostly centered on frontman Tony More’s spasmodic guitar style.  Feedback, distortion, and harmonics periodically leap out of the soundscape, particularly on the record’s brilliant “The Last Time I Was Sober.”  Moments of eclectic rhythm patters shudder through “Not A Wise Man” and the punk anthem “Outsider.”  The record’s opener, “Scare Off Crows,” pits some of this same punk sensibility against southern blues riffs in a satisfying display of technical talent and powerhouse rocking.  You can pretty much see More and Dav as kids telling their parents “I just want to play rock and roll.”

Best of all, Lady Flint is released through Bandcamp on a name-your-price system.
