Eric Clapton releases hidden “Journeyman” track for the first time

Eric Clapton has released a new music video for “Higher Power”, one of the previously unreleased tracks from the newly issued Journeyman: Deluxe Edition. Written by Jerry Williams, the song originates from the original recording sessions for the 1989 album and is now available publicly for the first time.

Journeyman: Deluxe Edition revisits the original record with newly remastered audio and four bonus tracks that were recovered from archival tapes. The release includes three unreleased songs from the original sessions along with an additional bonus track. The album features collaborations from George Harrison, Phil Collins, Chaka Khan, Daryl Hall, Robert Cray, and others who contributed to the original recordings.

Speaking on the legacy of the record and its title, Clapton has emphasized the importance of musicianship during this period of his career. “Journeyman . . . It’s what I want to be known as; I like to think I’m a craftsman. I think I’m always working on mastering my craft.”

The expanded edition was prompted in part by fans circulating session outtakes online. The archival discovery led to a review of material from the era, resulting in tracks that were mixed and mastered from their original sources for official release.

Journeyman is often noted as a pivotal album in Clapton’s late 1980s output and features songs such as “Pretending”, “Bad Love”, and “Running on Faith”. The new release brings additional context to the era, offering material that was recorded but not issued at the time.
