Joe Bonamassa reveals what makes Eric Clapton great

Joe Bonamassa believes greatness in music goes far beyond technical ability, pointing to Eric Clapton as a prime example of what separates a great guitarist from a legendary performer.

In a recent interview with Blues Rock Review, Bonamassa was asked what he considers the most important intangible quality needed to achieve greatness.

“The ability to go out there and entertain,” Bonamassa said.

For Bonamassa, the ability to connect with an audience is more important than technical proficiency. He explained that Clapton possesses a rare ability to make even the largest venues feel intimate.

“You look at a guy like Eric Clapton, he goes out, as soon as he hits the stage, the arena feels small. It feels like a club. It’s larger than life,” Bonamassa said. “It’s a persona. It’s experience with material and a delivery system. That’s to me greatness.”

According to Bonamassa, that commanding stage presence comes from a combination of experience, material and delivery. While many guitarists focus on demonstrating their technical skills, he believes true greatness is measured by the impact an artist has on an audience.

“Everybody can shred,” Bonamassa said, acknowledging that he has also been guilty of focusing on speed and technical ability. He noted that the online guitar community sometimes places too much emphasis on how fast someone can play.

Clapton, however, demonstrates that musical impact doesn’t necessarily require complicated guitar playing.

“But Eric Clapton goes out there and plays one note, sings one phrase, and you’re like, ‘That’s, that’s the reason why he’s Eric Clapton.'”

Bonamassa’s comments highlight the distinction between technical mastery and the ability to create a memorable musical experience. In his view, Clapton’s greatness lies not simply in what he plays, but in how he delivers it and connects with an audience.
