Warren Haynes reveals “Melissa” featuring Derek Trucks recorded in one take

Warren Haynes has revealed a new version of “Melissa” recorded with Derek Trucks. It’s from Haynes’ newly released album, The Whisper Sessions. In a recent interview on the Blues Rock Show, Haynes told Blues Rock Review the song was recorded in just one take.

Haynes said, “We came there to record ‘Real Real Love’ and ‘These Changes’ and as we were about to pack up, Derek (Trucks) said, ‘Should we do another tune? Should we do a cover or something?’ and I was, like, ‘What about doing Melissa?’ And we both thought, well, let’s do it once, and if we like it, we’ll use it, and if we don’t like it, we’ll scrap it. And so we wound up liking that version and keeping it.”

Haynes added, “Most of the stuff was one take,” when asked about The Whisper Sessions.

There will never be another Gregg Alllman, inarguably, but Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks did justice, and honor, to Gregg’s legacy with this video/recording of “Melissa”.

I heard “Melissa” performed live with Gregg Allman on vocals back in 2002, during the ABB tour supporting the “Hitting The Note” album release, with Warren and Derek, of course, on guitars.

Pure magic, and ethereal experience – I just am thankful to have seen the Brothers back in superb musical form, as I was bit too young to see them in concert during their
Duane Allman/Dickie Betts/Berry Oakley era, although even as a young teen then, I embraced their talent.
