Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts has died. He was 80 years old.

A statement was released from his spokeperson saying, “It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Charlie Watts. He passed away peacefully in a London hospital earlier today surrounded by family. Charlie was a cherished husband, father and grandfather and also a member of The Rolling Stones, one of the greatest drummers of his generation. We kindly request privacy of his family, band members and close friends is respected at this difficult time.”

The Rolling Stones announced earlier this month that Watts would not be joining the band on its upcoming tour. He underwent an undisclosed medical procedure this month.

Watts has been a member of The Rolling Stones since 1963.
