Virgil and the Accelerators: Live At Marshall CD Review

Live At Marshall is the latest exhilarating piece of live blues rock material to come from Virgil and the Accelerators, a relatively young troupe that have no fear of making themselves heard. The British three-piece band is made up of lead guitarist/singer Virgil McMahon, his brother Gabriel on the skins and Jack Timmis on the bass. The live album is a follow-up to their debut record, The Radium, released in 2011.

First on the set list is “Working Man,” a full throttle explosion of gutsy guitar, pounding bass and a pulsating drumbeat. If you have never heard this band before and just so happen to stumble into one of their gigs, you will soon realize you probably don’t want to stand next to the speakers. Other tracks to listen out for include the thumping “Backstabber.” This tune makes it easier to see where the foundations and influences of the group lie, with hints of classic rock blending with the heavy blues rock exterior.

It may be that after the sixth or so track, it is becoming a little difficult to single out any one in particular as being distinct or varying in dynamics and timbre. However, “What? Am I To Do” dares to drift into that explorative style of lead guitar genius accompanied by a solid rhythm often heard in more traditional blues. “Don’t Shake My Hand” follows with a moody slow tempo tune, giving us a taste of Virgil’s poignant and accomplished vocal, something that seemed a bit lost in the haze of heavy instrumentation of previous tracks.

In all this is a solid performance that will hopefully give the band a firm platform to stand on before releasing another studio album. A touch of refinement in some of the heavier material combined with their already bursting desire and talent could make for an appetizing career.
