Nitroville: Can’t Stop What’s Comin’ Review

Nitroville first formed in 2010 as a hybrid blues and hard rock outfit, working together for six months before recording their first album, Can’t Stop What’s Comin’, now released. A group focused on the moment, their policy is largely against the all-too-popular post-production editing, adopting a “Pedals are for pussies” catchphrase. Amusing and straightforward in sound and personality, Nitroville puts forth a heavy rock sound on their debut album, forcing the listener to have no choice but to tap his toe as he plays all eleven tracks. Backed by driving guitar and solid vocals, this group has a decidedly strong album.

The music is primarily led by a distorted blues riff on guitar and female vocals for every song. Nitroville has clearly found a sound that works for them, which is both good and bad. On the positive side, it sounds good. The female vocalist is strong, and her voice is well suited to the electric, energetic force behind their music, and she blends well with the powerful guitar line as well. On the converse, it makes many of the tracks blend together. It becomes difficult to distinguish the songs from one another, and while catchy, they are a smidge too uniform when it gets to the bottom line.

On the whole, Nitroville is a good-bad. They have a solid group of talented musicians, and their songs are easy to listen to. But, none of them are particularly memorable. They easily fall into a pattern, and as enjoyable as it is to listen, it leaves the listener wanting for something unique to set them apart. This might be one of the groups that solely functions as background music, which would be a shame, because of their talent and appeal. For a first album, however, they truly have produced a set of tracks with an even quality. It is more than worth a listen, and leaves in its wake high hopes for a followup.
