Evan Watson: South EP Review

South is the new EP from American guitarist and singer/songwriter Evan Watson. Watson made his debut in 2009 with A Town Called Blue, which featured Evan with his band, The Headless Horseman, and is one of the more under looked blues rock albums in recent memory. Now Watson returns with South, an 8 track EP solo effort written, recorded, mixed, and mastered by Evan himself.

South begins with “The Giving Tree,”  a song that Watson wrote for Meat Loaf’s upcoming album Hell In A Handbasket. Time will tell how Meat Loaf’s version turns out, but Watson’s is a fantastic rendition. “The Giving Tree” features Watson on both guitar and harmonica, and really shows off his great vocal talent. “Woodpecker” is a favorite on Watson’s current tour and is ridiculously catchy. It is always fun when an artist makes their instrument sound like the topic they’re singing about as Watson does with both his guitar and voice. “Coal” is another catchy track featuring a foot stomping chorus with a vocal harmony that will stay with you for days.

At just 26 years of age, Evan Watson continues to establish himself as a top up and coming talent. South is raw, rootsy, and a true tour de force. Watson is such a multifaceted artist. His guitar playing his great, but his vocals are equally impressive. If you enjoy music in its purest form you will love Evan Watson’s South.
