Rock and Roll Hall of Famer returns home after 10-hour open-heart surgery
Rock legend Glenn Hughes is back home recovering after undergoing a 10-hour open-heart surgery at UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center in Los Angeles.
The former Deep Purple bassist and vocalist shared the encouraging update on Instagram, revealing that he spent eight days in the hospital following the procedure.
“Now home after an eight day stay, and a 10 hour open heart surgery, operation, at UCLA, Ronald Reagan Medical Center. Gratitude beyond,” Hughes wrote.
The update comes after Hughes recently announced his retirement from touring and live performances due to ongoing health concerns.
In his previous announcement, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee revealed that a series of medical tests had led doctors to recommend another open-heart surgery.
“This past year, I’ve had some health issues. The results from numerous MRIs, CT scans, and an echocardiogram have alerted my medical team, that I need another open-heart surgery. I really have no option and no choice as health is my number one priority. Grateful to have been chosen with a life full with the gift of music… Thank you for walking beside me.”
Following the announcement, all of Hughes’ upcoming live performances were canceled as he shifted his focus to his health.
Known as “The Voice of Rock,” Hughes first gained prominence with Trapeze before joining Deep Purple in the 1970s, contributing to the albums Burn, Stormbringer and Come Taste the Band.
His career has also included an extensive catalog of solo recordings and collaborations with Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi, Black Country Communion and The Dead Daisies.
In a recent interview with Blues Rock Review, Hughes’ Black Country Communion bandmate Joe Bonamassa called Hughes, “One of the greatest singers to ever sing rock and roll, one of the greatest bass players to ever hold a precision bass.”
Bonamassa added, “He doesn’t owe anything to anyone, and I’m very proud of him and proud of the music that he and I have made and cherish our friendship.”
While Hughes has not shared additional details about his recovery or the procedure, his latest update confirms that he has been discharged from the hospital and is recovering at home following the lengthy operation.
