Warren Haynes reveals the guitarist who “floors” him every time

Warren Haynes has shared the stage with some of the greatest guitarists in music, but there is one player who continues to amaze him every time they perform together.

During a recent interview with Blues Rock Review on the Blues Rock Show, the Gov’t Mule frontman was asked whether there is a guitarist who leaves him in awe on stage.

Haynes mentioned several musicians he admires, including Derek Trucks and Jimmy Herring, before singling out jazz guitar legend John Scofield.

“When I play with Scofield, it floors me every time,” Haynes revealed. “And I’m thankful for the relationship that we have.”

Haynes and Scofield have a musical relationship that stretches back decades. Their collaborations have brought together Haynes’ blues and Southern rock influences with Scofield’s distinctive jazz guitar approach.

One of their most notable collaborations came with the release of Gov’t Mule’s Sco-Mule in 2015. The live album features recordings from two 1999 performances in Georgia with Scofield joining the band for an instrumental exploration of jazz, blues, rock, and improvisation.

Their musical chemistry is something Haynes particularly appreciates.

“We have a really good musical rapport and have done a lot of great stuff together,” Haynes said. “But I am and always will be a big fan.”

For Haynes, who has spent much of his career performing alongside celebrated musicians in Gov’t Mule, The Allman Brothers Band, and various collaborative projects, Scofield remains a guitarist whose playing continues to surprise and inspire him.
