Marcus King edges Kingfish for top spot on Billboard Blues chart

Marcus King’s Darling Blue debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Blues Chart, edging out Christone “Kingfish” Ingram’s Hard Road, which entered at No. 2. Both albums were released on September 26.

Bobby Liddycoat reviewed Hard Road for Blues Rock Review, and said, “This album definitely demonstrates a growth in maturity and impressive versatility. Ingram has been described as embracing genres – funk, soul, hip-hop, pop, and jazz – and with this album, he seamlessly crosses their boundaries with ease and remarkable acuity.”

In a previous press release, Ingram stated, “These songs are about owning my story. They’re about learning to see myself clearly and seeing others with more compassion. That’s changed the way I write, the way I play, and the way I live.” Liddycoat highlighted the album’s versatility, noting its seamless blending of multiple genres while still delivering “plenty here for those hooked on his towering guitar wizardry.” Hard Road marks a new chapter for Ingram as he expands his sound while maintaining his blues foundation.

Moe Moore reviewed Darling Blue, describing it as “one of those albums that’s enjoyable from start to finish.” Recorded at Capricorn Studios in Macon, Georgia, the album features collaborations with artists including Jamey Johnson, Noah Cyrus, and Billy Strings. With Darling Blue, King explores a broader mix of Southern soul, roots rock, country, and blues.

The simultaneous releases from King and Ingram made for a notable week on the Billboard Blues Chart, with both artists pushing into new musical territory and securing the top two positions.
