Selwyn Birchwood announces “Electric Swamp Funkin’ Blues”

Award-winning blues artist Selwyn Birchwood will release his sixth album for Alligator Records, Electric Swamp Funkin’ Blues, on Friday, March 27, 2026. The album will be available on CD, translucent yellow vinyl, and across all major digital platforms.

The first single from the album, “The Church Of Electric Swamp Funkin’ Blues,” has been released alongside an accompanying music video. The track serves as Birchwood’s mission statement, inviting listeners into the world he has created. As Birchwood sings, “the music is the mission….[it’s the] creation of joyful jubilation.”

Electric Swamp Funkin’ Blues features 10 original songs written and recorded in Florida, with Birchwood handling production duties himself for the first time on an Alligator Records release. The album moves between personal reflection and broader social commentary, touching on themes of relationships, parenting, technology, and modern life. Tracks such as “Damaged Goods,” “All Hail The Algorithm,” and “Talking Heads” showcase Birchwood’s songwriting range, while songs like “Labour Of Love,” “The Struggle Is Real,” and “What I’ve Been Accused Of” highlight his blend of slide guitar, lap steel, and soulful vocals.

Discussing the experience of producing the album, Birchwood said, “Producing allowed me to really take the wheel and steer the music to the exact destinations that I wanted to go. It allowed me to present these songs with the full, three-dimensional sound that I have wanted all along. This album is the full realization of the sound I have been cultivating. It tiptoes the tightrope between gritty gutbucket blues and contemporary grooves to create a soundscape that honors the roots but allows listeners to experience the music from a modern vantage point. Sharing songs with this much honesty allows us all to connect to music on a higher level…to feel a little less isolated and a little more ‘seen’ in what can be a hard life at times.”

Birchwood is also widely known for his live performances, where his barefoot stage presence, dynamic guitar work, and commanding vocals have earned him a reputation as a must-see act. Fellow blues artist Joe Bonamassa has praised Birchwood’s performances, saying, “Selwyn Birchwood has become one of my favorite discoveries. He puts on a great show.”

Looking ahead, Birchwood emphasized the importance of maintaining a distinct musical identity. “You would be hard-pressed to find an album or a band that sounds exactly like mine, and that has been and always will be the goal. I pride myself in writing songs so that when you hear a band like us, you hear a band that sounds just like…US!”
