Guitar legend dies at 74

Guitar legend Chris Rea, whose work left a significant mark on blues rock and popular music, has died. He was 74.

A statement posted to Rea’s official social media confirmed the news. “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Chris, who died peacefully following a short illness. Chris’s music has created the soundtrack to many lives, and his legacy will live on through the songs he leaves behind.”

Born in Middlesbrough, England, Rea built a career defined by his warm, gritty vocals and deeply expressive guitar work, blending blues, rock, and soul into a sound that was instantly recognizable. He rose to international prominence in the late 1970s and 1980s with a run of albums and singles that connected emotionally with audiences across generations. Songs such as “The Road to Hell,” “On the Beach,” and “Driving Home for Christmas” became enduring staples of his catalog.

Rea was also widely respected for his slide guitar style, which brought a raw blues edge to his songwriting and set him apart from many of his contemporaries. Over the course of his career, he released more than 20 studio albums and continued recording and performing well into the later years of his life, even while facing significant health challenges.
