Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Bobby Rush ignite the blues on Young Fashioned Ways tour
Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Bobby Rush kicked off the Young Fashioned Ways tour at the Uptown Theater in Kansas City on Friday, April 25. The tour is named after the duo’s acclaimed new album.
Rush and Shepherd showed instant chemistry in their opening seven song set, which started with “Hey Baby.” After a few songs, Shepherd mentioned to the crowd that they had been doing rehearsals, and new things were already happening in the show that they hadn’t rehearsed. This caused Bobby Rush and the crowd to burst out laughing as Bobby entertained the crowd with his improvisation.
You wouldn’t know Bobby Rush is 91 years old with the energy he showed on stage. Rush remains quite the showman, entertaining the crowd with stories and in performance with Kenny.
During the set, Kenny said he often thinks about what album he would pick to turn a new blues fan on to and he often thinks of his heroes, but Shepherd said, “I’m proud to say that the record that I made with Bobby Rush, I believe, is one of those records because Bobby is the real deal.” Shepherd added, “I’m a product of people like him.”
Following Shepherd and Rush’s entertaining blues set, the 7-piece Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band hit the stage for a lively and energetic set of blues rock. The band played crowd favorites such as “Woman Like You,” “Deja Voodoo,” “While We Cry,” and “Blue on Black” in the encore.
Then Bobby Rush returned to play a few more songs to the delight of the crowd. Fans were treated to over two and a half hours of music, and while this was the beginning of the tour, everyone was clicking on all cylinders.
