Jade MacRae: In My Veins Review
As one of Joe Bonamassa’s backing singers, Jade MacRae is the envy of many of us, with the privilege of hearkening up-close to the super-premium tone and different shades of blues that the modern day blues-rock maestro gifts to the world. But just like being picked by your mother over your siblings when there’s a fight to sit in the front seat of the car, all privileges are earned.
And let’s be frank, if Bonamassa wants you in his band, even teetering on world-class will see you left off the invitation list for his rather royal tea. Keeping pace with his obscene workload and touring schedule is no mean feat either, but MacRae has managed to do just that, Better still, she’s somehow found time to infuse her definitely soulful sound with horn stacks, a quiver of punchy, soul infused riffs and rhythms, a ton of attitude, and a host of premium musical talent that weighs in on a time of generational panic — the pandemic.
And then there’s that sweet voice, so unmistakable and unwavering. One that’s able to take you on a journey deeply personal on the slow, groovy jaunt of “Out Of Sight,” and then beautifully proclaim the revolutionary power of self-love and bravery in an often brutal world on “Rose Coloured Glasses.” The latter grooves along every so smoothly with throwback horns and jaunty honky-tonk piano jabs (courtesy of Jade’s legendary father David).
Bonamassa (obviously) makes an appearance, throwing in some amazing guitar work on “Early In the Morning,” taking great care not to overshadow the ‘giving me goosebumps’ vocals of MacRae. While one track is probably all Bonamassa has time for amidst his hectic schedule, another modern guitar master Kirk Fletcher adds in his blues chops on four numbers, most notably the funky title track with its moog synthesizer and classic clavinet bright sound, akin to a slapped guitar or bass string.
No matter where you turn, MacRae’s fourth full length studio release In My Veins is full of infectious music to free us from our angst and worries. Even though it falls far from the ‘blues-rock’ tree, her vocal power and prowess is undeniable.
This 10-strong collection of excellent songs is certainly more funk and soul than the feast of blues and rock she’s accustomed to serving up alongside Mr B, but if you dig a vibrant horn stack section and are willing to give a brilliant backing singer her deserved moment in the spotlight, this long-time favorite of Australian soul and R&B is definitely worth a whirl.
