McKinley James: Working Class Blues Review

McKinley James is an American roots blues guitarist with experience from dive bars in Nashville to headlining in Europe alongside his bandmate and father, Jason Smay. Having released their debut album Live! in 2022, Working Class Blues is their debut studio album. Working Class Blues is not confined to traditional blues, rather it embodies a blend of old soul and contemporary flair to American rock & roll with amplified soul and raw rhythm & blues into a distinctive sound driven by groove and guitar.

Starting out with “Movin’” we are introduced to soft blues characterized by gentle instrumentation that supports the heartfelt vocals, creating an atmosphere where the poignant lyrics evoke emotions and storytelling with clarity and sincerity. Movin’ right into “Get To My Baby,” a high-energy blend of rock ‘n’ roll and blues featuring a robust bass line that drives the upbeat tempo reminiscent of traditional blues and classic old-school style delivering a comforting message with wholesome themes, making it an uplifting and nostalgic song. The third song on the album, “Always On My Mind” isn’t an Elvis cover but this original blues tune is certainly infused with the vibrant energy and swagger of 1950s swing. The vocals carry a blend of raw emotion and cool confidence, telling a tale of love, channeling the timeless charm and rebellious spirit of the greaser scene with a slicked-back blues heartbeat. Switching up the vibe and exemplifying how McKinley transitions between subgenres, “Just A Little Bit” captures the essence of the South, where time moves at its own pace and emotions run deep. The timeless allure of the blues immerses listeners in its soul-stirring melodies as the after notes hold for longer periods of time and fades into the next one. The fifth track, “Crazy Over You,” is lively and infectious with up-tempo rhythm and playful lyrics that cleverly play on words. “I’m crazy, no telling what I might do. I’m crazy. I’m crazy over you” strikes the perfect balance of edgy charm and blending a hint of intoxicating passion with a touch of flirtatious allure, making it irresistibly catchy and captivating.

The next half of the album I found more pop blues than heavy blues rock. “Leadin’ Me On”  is radio-ready with relatable lyrics about a questionable relationship. It’s the perfect song to add to the road trip playlist. “Call Me Lonesome” breaks up the pop with a heavy, traditional blues beat that pounds with relentless rhythm, setting the stage for strong and piercing lyrics about living with a broken heart like a hammer striking an anvil, driving home the poignant message. “Stay With You” is the album’s ballad with sweet and kind lyrics about being with the one you love. “Say Goodbye” is traditionally pop heavy. The rock bridge and chorus deem it another good song to play in the car while your hair blows in the wind. “Wait and See”  has a prominent drumbeat with guitar accents that enhance without overpowering. It’s lyrically rich, delving into themes of navigating life with a broken heart, delivering a message of resilience and introspection amidst emotional challenges.

Working Class Blues is a record filled with songs that paint the feelings throughout each stage of love; flirty, madly in love, questioning the relationship, and utter heartbreak. Featuring a gamut of blues subgenres, Working Class Blues showcases McKinley’s diverse talent.
