Gary Cain: Outside The Lines Review

Gary Cain’s latest album, Outside The Lines, marks an evolution in the Canadian guitarist’s musical trajectory. Displaying his trademark rough-edged guitar sound and fusion of genres such as blues, rock and funk, the record delivers a solid collection of tracks that spotlight Cain’s versatility and proficiency as both a guitarist and songwriter, coupled with his adeptness as a vocalist.

Cain, now based in Austin, Texas, has carved out a musical identity rooted in the blues tradition while venturing into diverse musical territories. Cain’s journey began with intensive practice sessions in his youth, leading to both a deep respect for blues legends and the development of his own style. After early success in blues clubs and international recognition, he released his debut album Twangadelic Bluesophunk in 2017. Subsequent accolades, including top finishes in prestigious guitar competitions and extensive touring, paved the way for Cain’s relocation to Austin, where he navigated the challenges of the pandemic to create his second album Next Stop (2022). He now compiles his diverse array of experiences and influences on Outside The Lines.

The album kicks off with “Ain’t Got The Blues,” setting a lively pace with its driving rhythm and funk-laden guitar work. It’s a solid, lively opener that showcases Cain’s skills from the start. On the other hand, the following track, the elegant, R&B-styled “Resting On My Mind”, offers a more laidback experience, emphasizing mood and ambiance over blazing guitars.

However, “Ain’t Giving Up” and “Attitude” soon bring a more prominent rock edge to the album, with meaty riffs and frenzied guitar solos that venture into hard rock territory.

The instrumental piece “Far From Home” is another strong number and a platform for Cain’s most inspired leads on the record, while the funky, playful “I Don’t Care What You Say” and the trudging Hendrix-inspired monster “Keep On Walking” round out the record in strong fashion.

With only 10 tracks and a running time of 37 minutes, Outside the Lines is a concise, focused effort whose streamlined approach allows Cain to showcase his prowess without unnecessary embellishment, resulting in an album that feels raw, authentic and direct. The production/mixing style adds to that, with the rough-edged ends and slightly muddy quality contributing to the album’s overall genuine atmosphere.

Overall, Outside The Lines is a good effort that highlights Gary Cain’s dedication to his craft and superior guitar skills. It offers a satisfying blend of blues, rock and funk that is sure to resonate with any fan of these genres.
