Marcus King releases Rick Rubin produced single “F*** My Life Up Again”

Marcus King has released a new single produced by Rick Rubin called “F*** My Life Up Again.” King revealed to Blues Rock Review back in November that the song would be the first single from his upcoming album.

About the song, King said, “I was hesitant to record a song with such a foul word in it given my southern, Christian upbringing, but there were no other words I could find to capture the emotion I felt, the anger associated with missing someone you know is only going to bring you pain, missing a relationship that only hurts you, feeling hopeless to the point of wanting them to come back because the only thing worse than the co-dependent hell you created together is the profound loneliness you feel.”

In the interview with Blues Rock Review, King said the title of the upcoming will be Mood Swings.

“It’s just about being on the wrong medications and going in between therapies and being in a relationship with mental health issues while also being in a relationship, struggling with mental health,” said King. “It’s really taxing on all parties involved and it’s a really difficult time. When you add substance abuse into the mix, self-medication, it is just really difficult. And then you add other psychological things like codependency. That’s kind of what the first single’s about.”

On working with Rick Rubin, King said, “It’s been the project I’ve been working on for over two years. It’s the first record I’ve worked on with Rick Rubin, my producer. He’s also the head of the label I’m with. He’s just a beautiful human. He was really able to help me become even more vulnerable and cut right to the point of all these songs. It was a really beautiful experience and he was the right guy to produce this record. He really helped me get to the poignant nature of all these songs and just, you know, none of it’s metaphorical. It’s all really straight to the point.”
