Waterfront Blues Festival 2022 Preview

Portland, Oregon’s “Waterfront Blues Festival” will be returning to its normal post pandemic venue this year. The location is Tom McCall Waterfront Park in downtown Portland on the banks of the Willamette River where it has taken place annually since it began in 1987. As usual there will be four stages spread out on eight acres over four days beginning on Friday, July 1 through Monday, July 4 along with daily “Blues Cruises” featuring a variety of artists on the Willamette River on the Portland Spirit.

During the four day event scores of artists will be performing that include Taj Mahal and the Phantom Blues Band, Grace Potter, The Wood Brothers, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Galactic, Lettuce, Femi Kuti & the Positive Force, Curtis Salgado, the Ty Curtis Band and over seventy other acts. Prices begin at $35.00 for advance day passes and $40.00 the day of the event and ascend in price accordingly for  premium passes.

Bob Gersztyn

As a teenager in Detroit, Michigan during the early 1960’s Bob Gersztyn saw many Motown and other R&B artists including Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder. After his discharge from the army in 1968 he attended school on the GI Bill and spent the next 3 years attending concerts and festivals weekly. It was the seminal period in Detroit rock & roll that Bob witnessed spawning the MC5 and Stooges along with shows featuring everyone from Jimi Hendrix and the “Doors” to B. B. King and John Lee Hooker. In 1971 He moved to Los Angeles, California to finish his schooling where he became an inner city pastor promoting and hosting gospel concerts. He moved to Oregon in 1982 and began photographing and reviewing concerts for music publications.
