Top 10 Samantha Fish Songs
Samantha Fish has quickly turned into one of the premier artists in the blues rock scene ever since she released her debut album Runaway in 2011. Her records have been produced by some of the top guitarists in the blues rock genre including Mike Zito and Luther Dickinson. To see her perform live is a phenomenal experience. Here are Samantha Fish’s top 10 songs to date.
10. “Runaway”
“Runaway” is the title track from Samantha Fish’s first major studio album produced by Mike Zito. The song is nearly ten minutes long and establishes the fact that Fish is first and foremost a guitarist who loves to jam.
9. “Bitch On the Run”
In 2015, Luther Dickinson produced Fish’s Wildheart album and “Bitch On the Run” is one of the standouts that winds up in most of her live performances with ascending and descending raging guitar performances.
8. “Wild Heart”
Of course the title song from the album of the same name had to be included, especially since it once again showcases Fish’s incendiary guitar playing technique.
7. “Love Letters”
“Love Letters” from 2019’s Kill or Be Kind album on is great because it showcases Samantha Fish’s voice as much as her guitar when she passionately sings until her voice blends into a guitar solo only to emerge more enticing.
6. “Crow Jane”
Chills and Fever produced by Bobby Harlow for Fish’s last record on Ruf Records contained “Crow Jane, a 1920’s recording by Darius Daniels that has been re-recorded numerous times over the past century. She uses her four string “Stogie Box Blues cigar box” guitar that she purchased in 2012 in Arkansas and she rapturously plays it.
5. “You Got It Bad”
Kill or Be Kind produced a number of gems in 2019 including “You Got It Bad” which is a guitar-driven hard blues with Fish’s voice fading as the intensity of her guitar playing exceeds the limits until it’s a complete blowout.
4. “Dream Girl”
“Dream Girl” from 2019’s Kill or be Kind features Samantha’s clear lulling voice without the raging guitar. Her voice isn’t the rough and raspy sound of Janis Joplin but rather Emmy Lou Harris.
3. “Blood in the Water”
2017’s “Belle of the West” Samantha’s fifth studio album contained the haunting “Blood in the Water.” It had Fish stretching her vocals as they become more polished with each new body of work.
2. “Go Home”
“Go Home” is another cut from 2015’s Wild Heart album produced by Luther Dickinson. It’s an example of a completely different style that is a “Country Gospel” dirge reminiscent of the Carter Family that includes a New Orleans’s sound with the brass.
1. “Bulletproof”
“Bulletproof” is the lead song on Kill or Be Kind mixing haunting vocals with the unique guitar sound of her four string cigar box axe. The beat is driving enough to mesmerize the troops during a full frontal military assault.
Bob Gersztyn
The Whole Black Wind Howlin Album is better that the list you made. Gone for Good and Highway’s Holding Me Now Should be Number 1 and Number 2.
Wow, a few overlaps, but my list is almost entirely different. From first to tenth, I would recommend: 1) Blood in the Water; 2) Highway’s Holding Me Now; 3) No Angels; 4) Either Way I Lose; 5) Cowtown; 6) Bitch on the Run; 7) Heartbreaker; 8) Watch It Die; 9) You’ll Never Change; and 10) Runaway. And if you want to include songs from Girls With Guitars, “Bitch” and “We Ain’t Gonna Get Out Alive” could be on her best songs list too.
Where is black wind howling?
I guess it depends on who makes the list. None of these are on my list.
