Big boy Bloater and the LiMiTs: Luxury Hobo Review
Big boy Bloater has reunited with a new line up of the LiMiT’s including Matt Cowley (drums), Dan Edwards (keys) and Steven Oats (bass), to bring us a new killer album, Luxury Hobo. While the iconic B3 Hammond keys and guitar riffs assert themselves as classic blues, there’s also a little funk element going on in the album, particularly from the album’s namesake “Luxury Hobo Blues.”
My Favorite track, “I’ve got the Feeling Someone’s Watching Me,” has a clear homage to Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds “Red Right Hand” vibe dripping off it.
The album kicks off with a highly rhythmic “Devils not Angels” in which Dan Edwards shines with some hooky organ riffs. Towards the end of the album, “All Things Considered” adds a bit of soul to the record. Bloater has remarked about this album, that it was his way of working through some recent depression. “All Things Considered” shows the deeper side of the album and is a great example of the self-healing aspect of music.
Big boy Bloater is also known for his iconic voice which I can only describe as a Sarlacc pit, made out of gravel, and drinking molasses. Big, Deep, Bold, and yet somehow smooth and sweet. This, combined with his amazing guitar talent makes him a blues force to be reckoned with. As far as Steven Oats and Matt Cowley go, they hold down the fort like they’re playing the last show at the Alamo. I recommend listening to this album with a bottle of decent whiskey, and if you don’t have a bottle, borrow a cup from your neighbor.
