King Mud: Victory Motel Sessions Review
King Mud features Van Campbell from the Black Diamond Heavies, Freddy J from the Left Lane Cruiser, and Parker Griggs from Radio Moscow. These guys all brought their musical talents together in L.A. at a studio near the Victory Motel, where the album got its name. Victory Motel Sessions is overflowing with impressive guitar riffs full of soul. “Rat Time,” the first track, gets the album revved up with notes of inspiration from ZZ Top. The following track, “Smoked All My Bud,” screams gritty blues rock.
“Take A Look,” the sixth album track includes abundant slide guitar riffs making for almost a Hawaiian vibe throughout the song. The eighth track, “I Can Only Give You Everything,” brings to mind Foghat’s “Slow Ride,” in the intro that is carried through the track. At about the half way point of the track, they break into a sweet guitar solo and finish the song with a bang.
The added bluesy piano and groovy harmonica easily make “Suzy’s Cookies,” the big hit of the album. Giving off a smooth, chill vibe, you may feel like you are hanging out in King Mud’s garage listening to the guys jam out. This song is just as awesome as the title.
King Mud’s Victory Motel Sessions will make you want to drive fast down a country road in a truck with big tires with the windows down and maybe grab some of Suzy’s cookies while you’re at it. This album is a great example of what blues rock should be and each track will leave you excited for the next. The guys of King Mud collaborate naturally and created a great album.
