The Gravel Project: The Gravel Project Review

The Gravel Project is the self-titled album of Boston native Andrew Gravel. The Gravel Project features Dave Fox (drums), Brad Barrett (slide guitar and bass), and of course, Andrew Gravel (guitar and vocals). The Gravel Project is filled to the brim with upbeat rhythms and positive messages, making it an all-around feel-good album.

As the band’s debut LP, The Gravel Project shows off these musicians’ ability to seamlessly fuse together the gritty guitar riffs of rock, the relaxed vibe of reggae, and smooth, bluesy vocals. Fox and Barrett provide solid performances, especially in the foot-tapping earworms “When I Get Back Home” and “Dollar Bill.” Nearly halfway through the collection of tracks comes the ballad “In the Moonlight,” which helps give the record some variety by serving as a nice wedge between the primarily lively pieces. Gravel delivers polished vocals throughout the entire album, which is closed with one of the most lyrically and rhythmically strongest songs on it: “New Speedway Boogie.”

The Gravel Project have managed to successfully convey the simplistic poignancy of everyday themes with its lyrics, and give them a sanguine sound with its instrumental elements. The Gravel Project is a collection of some fine songs and should help solidify the name they’re making for themselves.
