27 Plus: Change EP Review

27 Plus is a blues/rock band from Boston. They recently released their debut 5 song EP titled Change. The band consists of vocalist Emma Hern, Ben Clay and Matthew Russo on guitar and vocals, Jharis Yokley on drums, and Daniel McDowell on bass.

The EP has five original tunes and starts off with the title song “Change,” an up-tempo rock tune. It is followed by another up-tempo rock song “Rolling into NYC,” which is more on the bluesy side and features Ben Clay singing lead alongside Emma.

The other three songs on the EP are outstanding. “Where I’ve Been” showcases the group’s songwriting and musicianship. With a blues vibe, clever lyrics, smooth melody and backup harmonies, tight stops, and a smoking guitar solo, this one is a must hear.

Through laid-back verses and a contrasting rock chorus, “Don’t Ya Know” displays a funky side to 27 Plus. Emma starts out with a soft sultry vocal but when the chorus hits she belts out “Don’t ya know that it’s true the things that you do just make me go crazy…” with power, soul, and an edge that is rare in some of today’s music.

The final song of the EP, “The Last Word” is an unexpected gem. Once again the band is tight and demonstrates how well they are able to play together, giving bassist Daniel McDowell an opportunity to have an amazing bass solo. Matt Russo takes the spotlight as the lead vocalist on this soulful blues/rock/r&b inspired song. Russo’s vocals provide a different, unique, and refreshing tone to the EP.

Change is available for a “name your own price” download at the band’s Bandcamp page.

The Review: 7.5/10
