The Trading Co. Review
With their debut album, The Trading Co. seeks to provide a unique blend of blues, classic rock and indie music into a combination equal parts grit and soul. In some respects, the band succeeds; the psychedelic rock influence of Jimi Hendrix and the big sound of Led Zeppelin are clear. That being said, their album fails to separate itself from a crowded field.
The Trading Co. is a duo, consisting of guitarist Josh Griffin and drummer Jonathan Eldridge. Both are good enough players, and have a remarkably big sound, considering their limited instrumentation. The album kicks off with a gritty blues called “Sky Ain’t Fallin,” during which Griffin pays homage to the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughan on guitar and Eldridge creates a nifty snare groove bringing a little Cajun spice to the tune. The next several tracks move more into the rock and indie genres, with the highlights being “Keep on Giving” and “Wizard of Oz.” The rest of the tracks are not memorable, but aren’t bad either. The one exception would be “Find You,” where some intonation problems between the guitar and vocals cause the song to suffer. Basically, this band isn’t bad, but they aren’t great either.
This critic is admittedly not a fan of guitar-drum duo groups. It is rare that a guitar player is able to compensate for the missing bass, however talented he or she may be. This band is no different and needs a bass player to fill in some gaps. The other problem is that most of their songs are very similar stylistically and tempo wise. More variation is needed if this group intends to move beyond the Oklahoma music scene. It would benefit them to work with a producer. Both Griffin and Eldridge are capable players, but need direction. They fail to meld their influences into a unique sound, instead sounding like each of their primary influences at different times. From this album, one can see that the two have talent, but need to refine their talent and sound before they are able to compete with the big boys in the genre.
