That Scoundrel: Everyone Has Their Something Review

Everyone has Their Something, but Some People’s Somethings are Weirder than Others is a celebration of classic guitar-based rock. With a heavy focus on driving beats, fuzzy guitar sounds, and shouted vocals, That Scoundrel’s latest release sounds like something you’d hear playing in a smoky bar. The vocals are reminiscent of some of The Pixies’ earlier work, particularly in songs like “So” and “Draw the Line.” The trio often draws from a progressive 70’s sound as well, like in “Yestisburg.”

​The album starts strongly, with the aggressive “So,” with its moderate pace and vocal bursts. The dynamic “Yetisburg” follows, keeping a formulaic pattern focused on an almost rockabilly guitar riff until about the two minute mark, when a time change signals the arrival of a darker portion of the song before finishing with the same riff the song starts out on. A few tracks down, Domino demands attention with its moveable beat and aggressive melody. “The Music Speaks” opens with a funky sort of groove and matures into one of the albums most memorable tracks, featuring shouted melodies floating on top of its bending guitar riffs and muscular drumming.

​The only real concern with this release is that perhaps it’s slightly monotonous. “North Crest Drive” is an excellent break from the norm, however, and pairs an acoustic guitar with an electric guitar in a short instrumental track that almost feels folksy. Aside from this, “The Music Speaks” and “10 PM” (particularly the intros to both tracks) carry most of the album’s weight for diversity. These three tracks are placed at timely intervals, however, making the album still a wonderful listen.

​Everyone has Their Something is a testosterone-fuelled rock album from a guitar-bass-drums outfit, refreshing and unique in the influences it draws from. It’s an album any blues or rock fan should be adding to their library.
