Video Premiere: Denise La Grassa – “Big Bad Dream”
Chicago blues artist Denise La Grassa is set to release her new album A Crossroads Communion on June 5, and Blues Rock Review is exclusively premiering the video for the album’s opening track, “Big Bad Dream.”
Driven by gritty guitar work, moody atmosphere, and a message rooted in the current state of the world, “Big Bad Dream” blends traditional blues influences with a modern edge. The track also sets the tone for the themes explored throughout A Crossroads Communion, an album that reflects on division, darkness, faith, and humanity’s struggle to find connection in turbulent times.
“I wrote this song after waking from a literally ‘Big Bad Dream.’ I feel I have an obligation to shine a beacon of light on the state of our world, and music is my megaphone,” says La Grassa.
The video captures both the tension and surrealism of the song, drawing inspiration from La Grassa’s experiences growing up in Chicago while also leaning into the dreamlike imagery behind the track.
“The video was partially inspired by my experiences on streets and alleyways of my hometown Chicago. I also wanted it to reflect the surrealness of my dream, and the fractured world we currently inhabit,” she says.
La Grassa also took a hands-on role behind the scenes of the video’s production.
“I produced the video, which was edited by Freddy Meyer.”
On A Crossroads Communion, La Grassa channels the spirit of classic blues artists while carving out her own identity. Influenced by names like Howlin’ Wolf, R. L. Burnside, Albert King, and Memphis Minnie, the album balances reverence for tradition with a modern approach.
“Classic blues has always resonated with me, it’s where my musical journey began when I moved to Chicago at age 20,” she adds. “And you’ll still hear classic blues at our shows. But I have my own voice and journey, and the songs coming out of me lately have been true to the blues that howls within me. I’m fortunate to work with talented musicians who feel the same as I do.”
Across the album’s nine tracks, La Grassa explores themes of social unrest, personal struggle, spirituality, and hope. Rather than dwelling entirely in darkness, the songs aim to encourage listeners to seek compassion, community, and light in uncertain times.
