John Butler: Tin Shed Tales Review
Tin Shed Tales is the newest album released by John Butler, and it consists of all live tracks. John Butler is not only an amazingly talented singer and guitarist, but he has also ventured into many other aspects of the music industry including starting his own record label and co-founding a program in his home country of Australia that seeks to improve artistic diversity. But getting back to John Butler’s newest album, Tin Shed Tales, it proves yet again how pure Butler’s talent for music is.
Tin Shed Tales has a very honest sound to the album; it’s clean and clear in quality and it hits the soul very easily because of how quickly the listeners can connect to Butler’s voice. It’s also very enjoyable to hear how Butler adjusts each song that he plays to only be played by one instead of a full band. “Better Than” is a great example of a song that is successfully modified to be played by one. Butler does it in such an impressive way, being able to incorporate a harmonica into the song to give it a fuller sound, yet still the strongest part is Butler’s voice alone. And other classics like “Used To Get High” are just as enjoyable to listen to with just Butler’s voice and a simple guitar melody.
I watched the John Butler Trio play in Montreal last summer at Osheaga, a summer music festival, and was instantly blown away by how talented they all were live. John Butler captured the entire audiences attention especially during his nine-minute live performance of “Ocean.” I have rarely since been in an audience that stood so quietly and mesmerized by one performer, with such respect for what he was doing. Tin Shed Tales captured that spirit for me, keeping both a playful and upbeat mood while still reminding us how surreal John Butler’s talent can be.
