Andrew Gabbard releases “Real Time” single
Later in April, Andrew Gabbard (Gabbard Brothers, The Black Keys) will be releasing his full six-track EP Big Belly Boogaloo. In the meantime, he recently released Part 1 of the EP back in February, featuring the title track, ‘Big Belly Boogaloo,’ along with ‘Skateboard Mothers.” ‘Boogaloo’ is a harmonious stream of consciousness lyricism. Andrew simply lists his favorite things…. which mostly include food. The song is like a cast iron skillet, Andrew admits, with lots of different flavors from the past, present, and future. And the absolute cherry on top of ‘Boogaloo’ is Neal Francis grooving on the electric piano. ‘Skateboard Mothers’ is a psychedelic experience in itself, layering vocals to create a whole new sonic tapestry.
Part 2 of the EP just dropped (3/28) and features two more fantastic tracks. The target single, ‘Real Time,’ is about as classic as it gets. Inspired by the Americana sounds of Harry Nilsson and Emitt Rhodes, the guitar twang and harmonica riffs feel like a nostalgic strut. Andrew’s vocals bring a sense of high-spirited optimism, and the structure of the track shows his knowledge of the art of writing a hit. The track is Andrew saying that he’s always there, should you need him. Inspired by letters from his Grandpa, ‘Real Time’ is simply Andrew expressing that he’s just always trying to have “a real time.” Also featured here is a live version of ‘Constellations,’ recorded at Tupelo House in Loveland, Ohio, home of Colemine Records. The track was initially on Andrew’s first 45 with Karma Chief Records. This stripped-back version features Sven Khan on lap steel as Andrew gives an honest and rich vocal performance.
