Bernard Allison: Highs And Lows Review
I remember being quite impressed by Luther Allison’s soulful vocals and flaming guitar work the first time I heard the live version of “Living In The House of The Blues”. It was my first contact with the great blues bandleader that would later frequently be added to my playlists. A short time later I also discovered the music of his youngest son, Bernard. The same musical magic was present, albeit in a different package. Born and raised in the heart of the blues scene, the guitarist has built a career as brilliant as his father’s, although experiencing less recognition given the blues’ decline in popularity. In the context of a return to action after the pandemic, Bernard launches Highs And Lows, his latest full-length effort.
Recorded at Bessie Blue Studios, Tennessee, and produced by the legendary Jim Gaines, the album features George Moye on bass, Dylan Salfer on guitar, Toby Lee Marshall on keyboards, drummer Steve Potts and saxophone player José James. Bobby Rush and Colin James feature as special guests. With this great support, Bernard presents a brilliant selection of soul and funk-infused blues rock numbers that function as a soundtrack to one’s life, from the triumphs to the heartbreaks. Such a theme resonates with everyone, especially in the current post-pandemic context.
And it is precisely in this context that the first track is inserted. “So Excited” is a straightforward mid-speed blues rocker that is basically about Bernard’s enthusiasm for getting back on the road and being able to play live. A simple, yet compelling opener. On the other hand, the title track is a little more intricate, packed with a funky feel and featuring scorching lead guitar work. Another highlight is “Strain In My Heart”, a soul-blues masterwork presenting a gripping, trance-inducing saxophone solo and a brilliant, R&B-styled vocal performance.
“My Way Or The Highway” differs slightly from the album’s main approach due to its country flavor. Either way, it’s a rock-solid blues rock guitar and voice duet between Bernard and Colin James, greatly elevated by its catchy chorus and excellent guitar solos. “Now You Got It” and “Gave It All”, cover versions of two of Luther’s numbers, present a natural reverence for the original songs while showcasing Bernard’s own style. “Last Night” is arguably the album’s finest moment. A stellar tempo-shifting blues rock number that displays Bernards at his best as his emotional, tormented guitar solos match the distress of a man chasing his unfaithful woman.
Highs And Lows captures the essence of a musician celebrating his heritage while expanding his voice and legacy. Certainly, an album that deserves all the attention.
