One artist here in the UK who beautifully encapsulates the Vocal v Guitar v Cover Versions debate is Chantel McGregor. She has a voice to die for and coupled with her equally rich and smooth guitar tone it’s like having Honey poured into your ears. She has one live and two studio albums which largely feature her own original material but it was two of her covers that first got me into her music. Her versions of Robin Trower’s ‘Daydream’ and Jonatha Brooke’s ‘Inconsolable’ are simply stunning. I prefer them both to the originals but I would never presume to say ‘Better than’ as it’s such a subjective thing.
She also does a fine cover of Sonny Boy Williamson’s ‘Help Me’ on her first album which is a lot of fun too.
Over the years I’ve become great friends with Chantel, her parents and her band mates and she’s one of the most delightful people you could ever meet. She’s knowledgeable, articulate, very funny and extremely modest about her abilities. I think she’d make a very natural interviewee and I’d be more than happy to put you in touch with each other should you ever consider it.
