Whitney Shay: Stand Up! Review
Hailing from San Diego, California, Whitney Shay returns with her brand new album, Stand Up! Focusing on themes of independence and empowerment, this album is a feel-good listen that showcases Shay’s skill as a singer and songwriter.
Stand Up! kicks off with the album’s title track, a lively blues song complete with jazzy horns and a fantastic guitar solo. The vocal melodies are perfectly suited for the dance floor and overall, the song would sound incredible at a live show. The second track on the album, “Someone You Never Got to Know” has a lighter instrumental and more sentimental lyrics. Despite the more emotional subject matter, Shay’s vocals are jam packed with energy. The chorus of this song is especially impressive, using simple words to really move listeners. But Shay’s sassy side is equally outstanding. Her song “You Won’t Put Out this Flame” is an anthem for female empowerment as she owns her femininity in unapologetic and cheeky lyrics. With steady drums, lovely vocal runs, and a call and response section, this song has the rocker spirit. This stands in contrast to “I Never Meant to Love Him,” a soft and slow ballad filled with soul that really highlights Shay’s vocal range. This song is personal but also relatable with beautifully written lyrics.
Overall, Whitney Shay has created a very dynamic, personal, and relatable album that is refreshing to listen to. Sure to inspire young female musicians, Shay is proof that the future of women in blues is very bright.
