Blues Caravan: Girls With Guitars Review

In 2011, Blues Caravan introduced a trio of musicians known as Girls With Guitars, and rocked international blues audiences. Now, in 2015, Girls With Guitars is back with three new, electric musicians. Enter Eliana Cargnelutti from Italy, and Sadie Johnson and Heather Crosse from the USA. With both a classic blues rock sound, and a contemporary twist, they’ve brought plenty of talent and energy to the blues scene.

The 2015 album goes all around the spectrum of blues, but keeps an upbeat and exciting vibe. The best word to describe this album is “fun.” It makes you want to get up and move to it. Every girl’s voice, whether singing or strumming, carries this good, exciting vibe with it, and gets you going to it. Their music is very reminiscent of the Rolling Stones and ZZ Top, but they definitely put their own sounds into the songs. It’s a pretty solid album all around. The singing and guitar playing is great, I loved the percussion for it, the bass was on point, and all the extra instruments they threw in from time to time lent pretty well. The only thing that really bothers me with the album is that they tried too hard to sound like something. Jimi Hendix puts it best, “Blues is easy to play, but hard to feel.” They tried a little too hard at times to go with their shtick, and there were only a few songs you could really feel down to your bones like you do in great blues.

All in all, it’s a pretty decent album. It’s something you can jam out to, or get up and move to. It’s fun, exciting, and gives you a good taste of the genre. Their live performances are great, they really get into it onstage, and their album really doesn’t do them justice. If you want a great blues experience, definitely go see them next time they’re touring near you.
