Mary C and The Stellars: Right On Time EP Review

With vocals that shred, Mary C keeps it cool with a sweet soulful swing, bejeweled in stellar accompaniment that include a full band, rightfully named ‘The Stellars’ and backing vocal duo, donned the ‘Sha’Nettes.’ Not unfamiliar to the spotlight, Mary C emerges from a family of talent and a childhood scene filled with rhythm and blues.  Mary, now poised to make her own mark on that very scene, debuts her EP Right On Time.

The band wastes no time in getting started, kicking off with the big hit, “Get Me Through.”  Exuding with the gusto of Aretha, Mary C embodies the queen of soul herself, as her vocals shine. This is not to overshadow the pitch perfect harmonies complemented by the Sha’Nettes, Shani Clayton & Cherette Lewis.  Capped off by a captivating solo on the keys, this jam will get your toes tapping.  This transitions to some soulful tracks, like “Love Automatic,” where Jackie Chasen’s sax line gives a funky frame to the melody.  The set ends with “Out of My Mind,” laced with a bluesy bass line, giving way to a spirited sing-along chorus, and bolstered by a killer guitar solo.

Mary C and her funky fresh Stellars bring us back to a time when rhythm and blues ruled the airwaves.  Her classy, soulful jive is reminiscent of the days of old, yet her tenacious spirit reaches to create the perfect blend of soul and modern blues, like an old friend driving down Broadway in her new Cadillac.
