The lights were down, the mood was set, and the stage was small. And that’s the way they like it. Mary C and The Stellars graced Stage 2 at the Rockwood Music Hall yet again on Wednesday, February 20th, adding another notch toward residency in their hometown NYC outlet.
The intimacy grew as the crowd packed into the small venue. The floor was filled from brick wall to brick wall. The light chatter evaporated as The Stellars took the stage. Mary C followed suit, and they were ready to go. With the brass section ablaze and the Sha’Nettes right on key, the band propelled through smash hits such as “Out of My Mind” and “Love Automatic.” The chemistry on stage was evident, each member swaying in their tight quarters, the energy radiating off one another.
Delving into some new raw material, Mary C broke into “Hit and Run,” soon to be stuck inside the heads of all who listen. Then they took it down a notch for the ever-soulful “Paper Moons,” Mary’s vocals shining right on through the track. It was now time for fan favorite, and single off their forthcoming album, “Get Me Through.” Jason lit up the keys to get it started, as the others joined in for the foot stompin’ sing along.
Not quite content to call it a night, the crowd chanted ‘one more song,’ as the band quickly returned to position to pump out a soulful rendition of a ‘Stones favorite, “Gimme Shelter.” An ideal fit for Mary and the Sha’Nettes’ vocal styling, the girls gave it their all, leaving nothing on the table. Cheers to that powerhouse of an encore.
If one thing’s sure, Mary C and The Stellars will get your blood pumping. Hands in the air, hips out of orbit, you just can’t help but be a part of the action, as the band and crowd become one. So whether you’re looking for a place to jam out to some great music, or just looking for some good cardio when that pilates class is full, I’d suggest checking out a Mary C show for yourself. Take it from me to learn her name now, your inner hipster will thank you when she’s selling out gigs across the nation.
