The 24th Street Wailers: Unshakeable Review

The 24th Street Wailers, a young academically trained Toronto-based blues band named after their home address, released their new dirty blues album, Unshakeable. Members include lead singer and drummer Lindsay Beaver, Beaver’s husband Mike Archer on bass, songwriter Emily Burgess who writes half of the material on guitar, and Jon Wong on saxophone.

“Home Cookin’” and “Unshakeable” have a terrific 60’s feel, slow yet upbeat, and fantastic vocals. You can’t unshake the feeling. “I’m Not Free” is a bit slower paced, so we have a great variety of tracks. Jon Wong’s saxophone shines in “Trouble” and “Jack, Jim, Johnny, and Me.” Everyone’s talents pool together creating a great blend in “I Will,” specifically the opening.

Currently, they received their first charting, # 15, for the new CD from CKCU in Ottawa, ON. Earlier this year, the band was nominated for a 2012 Independent Music Award in the Blues Artist/Group or Duo of the Year category from The Sirius/XM Radio Indie Awards.

Their first album, Dirty Little Young’uns, released in 2011, is comprised of 13 original tracks. Shortly after its release, Dirty Little Young’uns debuted at number three in Canada and number eight over all on the Roots Music Report, and was number 16 on the DAWG FM top twenty charts.
