Gary Clark Jr: The Story of Sonny Boy Slim Review

Gary Clark Jr. returns with his sophomore album, The Story of Sonny Boy Slim. After roaring onto the scene in the 2011 with The Bright Lights EP followed by 2012’s Blak and Blu, it’s safe to say The Story of Sonny Boy Slim is one of the most anticipated albums of the year.

The album gets off to a hot start with “The Healing.” The track mixes tasty blues guitar licks with a hip hop feel sounding modern and fresh. “Grinder” follows and has a similar theme. “Church” is a nice change of pace with its stripped down acoustics and shows another side to Gary. “Down To Ride” finishes the album out and has a similar atmospheric vibe to “Save Me” from Blak and Blu, a great closer.

At the end of the day, The Story of Sonny Boy Slim is a solid addition to Gary Clark Jr.’s catalog. It may not have as much guitar as some would like, but the songs are still solid. One thing about Gary is he’s not afraid to attempt different styles. Like Blak and Blu, The Story of Sonny Boy Slim can’t be confined to one genre. This is an album that has something for everyone and continues to see Clark grow as an artist.

One thought on “Gary Clark Jr: The Story of Sonny Boy Slim Review

  • I fell in love with Black and Blu album so I was looking forward to hear the new Gary’s album. But for me it is a big disappointment. I miss choruses in almost all songs on the album. Everything seems to be “not finished” to me…
