Jimmy Bowskill: Back Number Review

Back Number is the fifth album from Canadian blues rock guitarist and singer-songwriter Jimmy Bowskill. Bowskill‘s first album, Soap Bars & Dog Ears, was nominated for a Juno Award, and when he won he became the youngest person to be nominated for this award, at age 14.

The sound of this album is very energetic with powerful and highly amplified guitar riffs. I wouldn’t say that this is a heavy rock album by any means, however most songs on this record are not meant to be listened to while relaxing. This is a very commanding album, and what I mean by that is that each song demands all of your attention with the combination of Bowskill’s booming voice and the heavy guitar chords that accompany it. However there are a few songs that come as a pleasant surprise as Bowskilll changes up his sound. Both “Down The Road” and “Seasons Change” showcase that Bowskill can command an audience not just by his loud voice, but with a softer, slower rhythm and vocals. Jimmy Bowskill debuted his first album when he was 12-years-old, and it’s absolutely unquestionable that he is a very talented artist. However in Back Number, many of the songs seem to mesh together with similar rhythms and hooks, except for a few stand out songs that show that Bowskill is far from a one type kind of artist.
